Your Guide to Unforgettable Yarra Valley Experiences (Beyond the Cellar Door)
While our region is justly celebrated for its stunning vineyards and wineries, there’s so much more to explore beyond the cellar door. From rolling farmland to hidden trails, the Yarra Valley offers a depth of experience far beyond the wine glass. These are the places that offer a true connection to the heart and soul of the Yarra Valley.
If you’re seeking to explore unique local attractions and local artisans, you’re in the right place. I’ve lived here for over 30 years—and I still find new favourites. Whether it’s a small farm shop, a scenic walk, or a creative workshop, there’s something special around every corner.
Let me share a few personal recommendations of mine. Delightful spots and activities that I believe truly capture the authentic spirit of our valley.
Discover Local Craftsmanship at the Yarra Glen Racecourse Market
Should your visit coincide with a market day, I highly recommend calling in at the Yarra Glen Racecourse Market. It offers a wonderful opportunity to meet the talented artists, and craftspeople behind an impressive selection of premium quality goods. It’s an ideal place to find something truly distinctive.
Here’s some practical information to make the most of your day at the market.
The market is located at the Yarra Glen Racecourse, on Armstrong Road. Set against a stunning backdrop, the layout wanders through grassy lawns, winding roads, and pavilions—creating a charming country market atmosphere.
During market hours all internal roads are closed to traffic, and turned into pedestrian-only walkways for a relaxed experience. That said, surfaces vary underfoot—gravel, bitumen, and grass—some of which can be uneven in places.
Shade is limited, so don’t forget a hat and sunscreen on warmer days. As always in the Yarra Valley, conditions can shift—so tread carefully, especially with prams or wheelchairs.
To ensure everyone’s safety and comfort, dogs are not permitted in the market area (service dogs with ID are welcome, of course).
The parking is generally well managed. Two public car parks are overseen by the CMA, with help from the Croydon & Lilydale Lions Club and Yarra Glen Cricket Club. It’s a great example of local community support.
All in all, it’s a lovely market to explore, with a wide mix of stalls and a welcoming vibe. And if you’re visiting near Christmas, the festive markets are truly something special—perfect for finding one-of-a-kind gifts you won’t see anywhere else.

A Spirited Adventure and Sweet Delights
